Essentials for Starting a WindStars Pre-Band Program

Launching a WindStars pre-band program is an exciting way to introduce young students to instrumental music in an accessible, engaging, and developmentally appropriate way. Whether you’re building from scratch or expanding an existing general music program, success comes down to thoughtful planning, clear purpose, and the right tools. 

Choose a WindStars Level

The WindStars program is organized into two levels - you can start a pre-band program with either one. 

WindStars 1: Recorder step-up program

• The Dood and Toot use recorder fingerings (one octave) but introduce single-reed and flute embouchure. 

• Iconic and standard notation student books available. 

jHorn can be added for beginning brass introduction

WindStars 2: Beginning band primer

• jFlute/jSax/Clarinéo/jHorn use traditional instrument fingerings while all pitched in C - no transposition necessary. 

• Standard notation student books. 

Fundamental Materials

A successful pre-band program starts with the right equipment:

Class Set of Instruments

Decide whether instruments will be school-owned or family-purchased. It’s perfectly fine to start small and grow your inventory over time using grants, fundraising, or school funding.

​Having your own set allows you to model proper technique, posture, and tone production. Make sure they are marked in some way so you know they are yours!

WindStars Method Books

For WindStars level 1, consider whether you’ll use iconic or standard notation. You can also mix and match within the same class. WindStars 2 music is all in standard music notation.

Backing Tracks & Audio System

All WindStars tracks can be downloaded for free through the WindStars website when you create a free login. A reliable speaker or stereo system is essential.

Extra Supplies

• Materials for sanitation (more information below)

• Spare reeds (various strengths)

• Replacement mouthpieces (available for WindStars 2 instruments)

  • Helpful if you are sharing instruments between students

Music Display Options

​​Projecting music on a screen is often the easiest way to combine notation with the backing track. 

Don’t have a projector or screen? All WindStars music can be printed for free from the WindStars website under “Resources”. 

Organization & Storage

It’s important to have a plan for how you will store instruments between classes, taking into account your sanitation plan. Efficient systems save time and reduce stress. See the next session for more information about cleaning. 

Instrument Storage

Cases can easily be stored in bins, carts, or cabinets.

It’s helpful to group instruments by class or color-coded system

Don’t forget storage for spare parts

Labeling

Assign numbers or colors to each instrument and case. Make sure to use durable methods - for example, silver permanent market on black cases.

Tracking Ownership

Ensure students can easily identify their assigned instrument with unique instrument numbers

Summer Storage

After a deep cleaning, store instruments in cases in closets or large plastic totes

Cleaning & Maintenance

Having a well thought-out sanitation plan is essential for school and/or shared instruments. All Nuvo instruments are 100% waterproof and can be washed in any of the following ways:

Daily/Weekly Care

• Sanitize mouthpieces after each use

• Wipe down instruments regularly

• Can fully submerged in hot soapy water

Deep Cleaning

• Periodically wash instruments in warm, soapy water

• Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely

• Can use the school dishwasher but allow instruments to air dry

Reed Care

• Check frequently for damage

  • Replace if bent or tops are frayed

  • Reeds usually need to be replaced every few months with frequent use

• Replace as needed (younger students may require more frequent replacements)

Student Involvement

• Teach students to participate in basic cleaning routines
